Cesar Chavez who?

March 28, 2009

So I just completed my second-to-last rotation as a medical student and was lucky enough to get Friday off!  Why you ask?  Well…let me tell you about Mr. Cesar Chavez, a Mexican-American labor leader and farm worker who co-founded the United Farm Workers to help bring rights to migrant workers.  What does this have to do with me you ask?  Well, nothing.  But, I got the day off and took a quick 1.5-day trip home to see my nephews and then drove straight back up to San Francisco to finish my last rotation.  Two more weeks and med school will officially be nothing more than a memory!

And of course, some pictures from the nephew/niece filled weekend.

Sunrises in San Francisco

March 27, 2009

Found this on my hard drive today while trying to encourage a friend to check out the scenery.  It’s kind of sad that I’ll be leaving this beautiful city in only 2 months!  Make sure you say goodbye if you haven’t already!

The Mission

March 14, 2009

Living at Mission Bay, it’s hard to get a feel for what San Francisco is really like.  Sure there’s Muni to take you around and the shuttles to-and-from Parnassus, but what about the rest of San Francisco?  There’s so much this city has to offer and I feel I’ve only scratched the tip of the iceberg.  Well…in hopes of getting more acquainted with this fabulous city before I left, today’s trip features the infamous Balmy Alley.  This little street in the Mission, (24th Street between Treat and Harrison St.), is lined with colorful murals.  Each one tells its own unique story…some political, others satirical, some playful, but all serving as an expression of the issues that affect the lives of those living in San Francisco, as well as the people living across the globe.  Precita eyes is an organization dedicated to maintaining and preserving these murals and they’ve done an absolutely fantastic job.

Palace of Fine Arts

Taking a stroll through palace of fine arts

Went to the post secret exhibit this weekend.  It was interesting to see what people had to share and to see what others considered “secrets.”  There was a lot to read and it was all a little overwhelming, but it was amazing to see the courage that people had…putting themselves out there and letting go of the things that held them back.  Great stuff they’re doing…though a little silly and bizarre at times.
